Recently the crew of the Transocean Rather (TOR) in Angola made an upgrade to their rig cinema. They now display all of their Global Catch of the Week winners from the ESSO World Wide recognition program on the big screen.

According to BTB’s onboard coach for the TOR, Matt Wing “This is a big hit with all of the crew, especially the Nationals. We have won: 4 Gold, 6 Silver and 5 Bronze.”

We at BTB want to take this opportunity to congratulate the crew of the TOR, as recognizing and awarding those people who make a significant contribution to safety is essential in building a robust workplace safety culture. The crew of the TOR should be proud of their achievements and we look forward to seeing them build on their already impressive record.

The Beyond the Break coaches working with the Celtic Sea in Angola would like to congratulate the crew and management on achieving the fantastic mile stone of 365 Days with no LTI (as of the 11 September 2012). This date also marks the 1-year anniversary of the Transocean Celtic Sea working with Esso in Angola’s block 15.

The Celtic Sea crews are working so as to live up to their Safety Leadership Training (SLT) commitments to make a difference. The SLT provided a solid platform for on board BTB Safety Coaches Greg Homer and Peter Tomlin to develop a culture where intervention is welcomed and safety is a core component of any operation.

This pleasing LTI statistic goes hand in hand with the crew’s solid commitment to the Esso values of no hurts, no spills and honesty and integrity in everything those engaged in operations undertake. This has to date seen them accrue 158 days Hurt free and 315 days spill free. This record is currently getting broken on a daily basis.

The purpose of the inspection/review was to identify areas of performance through both subjective and objective criteria.

The BTB Tool allows an independent observer to collect information against key criteria, 37 measures and five key ‘schools’ of performance: Leadership & Team Development, Resources, Daily Rig Safety, New Personnel and Process Systems. BTB’s Stephen Thomas stated, ‘Drilling rigs in Nigeria face the same challenges that they do in any other location. There are of course unique differences observed in any cultural group, however; what a rig needs in order to achieve sustainably safe operations is the same no matter where you are. We observed this once again in Nigeria’

Over 30 days consistent themes were observed as well as unique factors that presented with each workplace location, drilling contractor and crew. Importantly by applying a benchmark measure against observed behaviour allows drill managers and rig managers clear pathways forward.

They have been a part of the Transocean Rather oil rig in Angola for some time now and the crew have just reached the fantastic milestone of ‘200 Hurt Free’ days.

What that means is they have not had a recordable injury (or “hurt”) of any kind for 200 days in succession which is a great achievement. Russell Telford noted “It’s a great achievement by all the guys. They have really done well. We are also proud to be a part of it.” Matt was equally wrapped; “We work really closely with the guys and to see them get to 200 days is a great effort. Now we are looking towards 300”.

In pursuit of achieving a hurt free workplace, the ultimate driver of this is having high performing teams which the “Rather” crew has demonstrated. It’s always a good feeling reaching a milestone but a big part of a positive safety culture is that they are really celebrated. We would like to congratulate the Transocean crew and their service partners working together with Esso Angola on reaching 200 days!

In pursuit of “continual improvement” we have also made some very useful insights in its use, content and applicability. This has resulted in refinements making it more applicable and, more importantly, able to reveal safety culture in more depth.

The expansion of the original BTB Safety Tool allows greater statistical analysis. What this means is meaningful “themes” can be captured and displayed – usually in the form of graphs and tables.

Although this may sound like a number crunching exercise, what it does is allow managers to clearly see where they are doing well and improvement areas to focus on. These outcomes are displayed with recommendations, or suggestions, that are straightforward to understand and implement to help address the shortfalls.

Importantly Hobark are trusted providers of services to the oil and gas industry and since 1998 have played a pivotal role in improving the standard of operations of Nigerian workers. BTB believes that we can bring our experience, expertise and enthusiasm to developing the leadership skills of Nigerian workers in delivering sustainably safe operations in offshore drilling operations”

Hobark International Limited was incorporated in 1998, deploying engineers to top tier energy firms active in Nigeria. Hobark invests heavily in building rapport with its clients in Nigeria understanding their current and future needs. Hobark is a 100% Nigerian owned company, and has played a major role in improving standards in regards to Nigerian oil workers. Hobark, with Beyond The Break Pty Ltd, wish to further the professional development of Nigerian workers in developing sustainably safe practice operations and developing their own safety leaders in offshore operations. Dr. Stewart Hase overviews how this was validated with the very audience he and BTB’s CEO, Simon Phin, were presenting to.

At the recent paper presentation at the Safe Alliance conference in Sydney, Simon and I talked about culture and safety. We started out by looking at the things that contribute to an unsafe culture. There are lots of them on a rig or mine site and most relate to human predilections. One of these things is an important and quite normal human attribute of overestimation. If you ask people to rate their cognitive ability about 80% will say that they are better than average. This is clearly impossible. The same can be said for things like leadership ability, interpersonal skills and overall ability. We tend to think that we are more popular than everyone else. Interestingly, people with lower intelligence rate themselves more highly than they really are and the more intelligent rate themselves as lower.

This tendency also applies to safety. People will naturally overestimate the extent to which they report their safety behaviour, their commitment to safety, their safety values: their safety consciousness. Overestimating is one of the reasons that attitude surveys, including those about safety, do not predict actual safety behaviour. For all intents and purposes you can take what people say about their safety consciousness and their safety behaviour as two different things. The thing that really demonstrates what they believe is their behaviour. Hence our behavioural tool.

The Safe Alliance conference participants were all people with a real interest in safety and were in management or safety management positions. They were asked to rate their personal safety consciousness compared to the conference group as a whole. As predicted about 80% to 90% rated themselves as above average. When we asked them about their safety behaviour in the simple task of mowing the lawn and driving behaviour many admitted that they did not behave safely. Surprising? Not at all. We don't always 'walk the talk' - in particularly when we are out of the zone, our workplace, and in the comforts of home. It's not what you say, it's what you do that counts.

This past week saw BTB’s Matt Wing undertake an intensive five day course to become an accredited ‘Tap RooT Advanced Incident Investigation Team Leader Course’. This will enable Matt to undertake the important task of leading investigations when and where needed. The benefit for our clients is an experienced and qualified professional understanding the many facets required of an investigation.

Matt has worked globally in a majority of countries including Asia, New Zealand, Australia and Africa on semi-submersible drill rigs, jack ups and platforms. After extensive experience as a SHE drilling contractor Matt has now moved into the operator side of things as a Safety Coach for BTB working for Esso Angola.

As Matt states: “At BTB we have a compelling need to keep moving forward with our own personal and professional development which was why I recently undertook the Tap RooT Incident Investigation Team Leaders course. This qualification now enables me to lead investigation teams at the highest level and gives us the ability to do this on demand for our clients globally wherever we are needed.

In my current role this new capacity will allow us to take any necessary pressure off the company representative on the rig and allow us to perform investigations on their behalf should we be requested.

Having used several different methods of incident and accident investigation I can confidently say the ‘Tap Root Advanced Investigation Team Leader Course’ is the best system available and it makes it quite obvious why the industry leaders use it as their preferred investigations method”.

Of course, it’s much more preferable to avoid an incident in the first place but it’s vital that lessons are taken away if something does occur. If you have any enquiries about incident investigations – or how to minimise the chance of one occurring through developing the appropriate safety culture and positive behavioural habits at your workplace see a number of our blogs that discuss how leaders and teams can initiate change.

It was an argument, some thought, a little hard to measure.

Following 18 months of data from operations in five different countries and hundreds of people engaged in observed 24/7 operations the argument remains as firm today as it did in 2010. Leadership is, first and foremost, the determining factor between sustainable success and failure. The argument, ‘When Culture Gets In The Way Of Safety’, deals with the fundamental premise that leaders must empower their people to have the confidence (and courage) to act. To do this we need to create, with particular emphasis on safe work practice, operations that not just allow but encourage people to lead and lead regardless of rank or position. The feedback? In the 12 months since then the crew of Rig 826 continues to maintain high performance in safe practice that, incidentally, has led to sustained performance in safe operations and drilling performance. An engaged crew with a common purpose and commitment to one another and each other’s safety and wellbeing has proven to be a winning formula.

With operations developing in the Darling Downs region of Chinchilla, Roma, & Miles Weatherford are extending their operations through the use of low impact fast moving drilling rigs. To maintain the high performance achieved by Rig 826 over the last 12 months BTB’s Keith Bell has been called in to help predominantly young crews find their feet and operate safely. Keith ‘Dinga’ Bell stated; “I’m passionate about seeing the next generation find their way safely and being able to work with young Australian men and women in our own country is a real privilege. When you help people find their role within the team, and the operation, you give them that encouragement to know that all of us play a huge role in safe operations”.

Simon Phin, BTB’s Chief Executive and President, said the reason for undertaking this project was one of concern about our future workplaces. ‘Over recent years we have noticed the significant ‘crew change’ that we are going to experience globally when the Baby Boomers retire and Gen Y take over. We are going to lose a heck of a lot of experience so we thought the ‘Elders Project’ was an initiative we could take in capturing story, as such, before the story teller left the workforce’.

For centuries traditional cultures have relied on story telling to ensure their culture survives and lessons learnt (keep away from the Tiger) were passed on to future generations.

BTB would like to thank Billy Morris Jnr, of the Western Canada Drill Team (Calgary) for his support in this initiative. Billy is a second generation ‘Company Man’ and recognised the great upbringing he has received through the love and guidance of his father, Billy Morris Snr.

Some people become more engaged safety leaders through a traumatic event they have witnessed and/or been affected by in some way. Billy conveys a story of tragedy in an inspiring way that almost asks: Is there a place for other ‘Elders’ stories that can impact others BEFORE rather than AFTER an even happens?

We’re always looking for constructive feedback. If you have any comments or even stories of your own we would look forward to hearing from you.

Greg has made the transition from hands on operations to hands off coaching. Although demanding, he has made some tremendous inroads during his 4-week hitch so we asked his thoughts and first impressions:

Angola, Africa - the dark continent. Many people heading off on a tour of duty to this part of the world are filled with fear and apprehension. There is such a stigma attached to Africa and the unrest in these parts of the world that if you buy into stereotypes it is easy to overlook the fantastic attributes of the people and the amazing culture awaiting you.

What I found on the Celtic Sea rig (Esso Angola offshore oil rig) for the most part were a group of welcoming and enthusiastic crew members who were eager to learn and highly approachable.

My 4 weeks were spent observing the current culture on the rig with regards to the management of health and safety and looking at pro active ways to assist in creating a safer working environment.

The transition from operation to observer and coach is quite challenging. Part of my learning’s whilst on-board was that making safety observations oneself is not nearly as powerful or important as helping others to perceive and evaluate risk in their own environment.

My top 3 tips for anyone who is heading to Angola for work on an oil rig are:

A smile is a welcome greeting in any language.

Displaying willingness to help and a genuine concern for the safety of others is a transparent way to break down cultural barriers.

Learn to do the Kuduro. The guys found my attempts to dance the Kuduro (Angolan night club dance) extremely amusing. White men can not dance – sorry for you Justin Timberlake.

Greg will soon be heading back out to the Celtic Sea to continue his positive impact on safety culture. He represents the values of BTB with his operational experience, natural talent for coaching others, and his overwhelming enthusiasm for safety that ultimately empowers others to do the same.

All Service Partners working offshore receive a detailed induction and have a BTB Safety Coach working closely with all teams on board. Many have also been fortunate enough to attend one of the Safety Leadership Training (SLT) workshops run by BTB before their campaign had begun.

One area that has been identified as “missing out” on this alignment process is the shore based Service Partner facilities. Esso Angola’s Drilling Manager initially asked for input to address this issue which BTB responded with a detailed outline of key focus areas. These were identified and collaborated by BTB Safety Coaches currently working offshore for Esso Angola in the region known as Block 15.

BTB Safety Coach, Brendan Quail, documented many of the observations who will now be leading the initiative once the green light is received from Esso Angola. We will update on this exciting new project as news comes to hand.

The Transocean Rather (TOR) in Block 15 off the Angolan coast in Africa has reached the 100 day milestone of No Recordable Hurts. Matt Wing, BTB Safety Coach, along with his back-to-back Russell Telford, has been working closely with the crews for the past 12 months and are both proud of their crews achievement.

ExxonMobil’s Drilling Operations Manager for Africa / World Wide Ventures, Harry Longwell, was quick to congratulate the crew for their fine efforts:

‘TOR Team, Further proof that safety and operational performance is all about the quality and commitment of the people working the business safely one day at a time. Well done by all associated with the TO Rather. Congratulations on this significant achievement in the most important aspect of our business. Let the celebration of this milestone inspire us all to even greater achievement’.

It is a good feeling when any milestone is reached but it is the icing on the cake when your efforts are acknowledged. Matt was equally supportive and reflective on the recognition:

‘This email is a reflection of all of the hard work that everyone has put in to the TOR. It is nice to get some feedback from above’.

Both Matt and Russell have been instrumental in assisting crews with uptake of Transocean’s new LIFT job planning process as well as the new Esso induction put together by BTB. Congratulations to Matt, Russell and the TOR crew for reaching 100 Days Hurt Free!

The recent de-mobilisation of personnel out of PNG for a short duration allowed BTB to revisit much of our pre-deployment (Executive Leadership & Safety Leadership Training) with the crews from Rig 702.

BTB Safety Coaches, Luke Fitzpatrick, GT Taylor and Keith ‘Dinga’ Bell led an intensive 2-day workshop for the crew of Rig 702 in Sale. Luke Fitzpatrick who has a long history of working in PNG in leadership positions stated, ‘We moved everyone outside, out of the class room and into the bush, (well the Sale Botanical Gardens). We wanted to put the boys back into the bush and make everything as real as possible’.

Tok Pisin? Luke said, ‘It just capped off our time with the boys. His ‘Defining Moment’ occured in 1990 sitting in a board room in Brisbane along with five other people discussing the probability of how many injuries and possible fatalities may occur on the ‘pipeline project’ he was about to start (this was required by the client) After arguing over two days they came up with the following numbers: Ten injuries and three fatalities, this was based on individual experiences and various statistical data. Over the eighteen month duration of the project there were twelve injuries, eight fatalities and one murder.

Accidents/incidents:

a bridge collapse (two fatalities and three injuries)

three major floods (two fatalities and four injuries)

vehicle accidents along the right of way (five injuries)

Helicopter crashed in bad weather (four fatalities)

Murder, the contributing factor was overwork, fatigue (a welders assistant had been working on a pipe barge for six months with no break got into a fight and stabbed a welder)

On completion of the project people would talk about it being an engineering marvel due to the hash terrain/environment and that it was completed on time and within the budget. However the loss of life and injuries was not taken into account.

This project had a profound effect on Dave; it showed the importance that people and organisations understand safety and efficiency in the work place. Twenty two years later the fact that there was even a discussion on how many people were going to be injured/killed says that the mindset to “ZERO Harm to People and the Environment” has come a long way.

BTB Finalises Induction Roll Out for Esso Angola

After an extensive planning period, the Esso Angola induction package was rolled out for Esso Angola across their three rigs currently drilling in Block 15. It included a DVD, quiz, and format to ensure a consistent delivery.

The purpose for the Esso Angola Safety and Environment induction is to:

Outline Esso’s credos – “No Hurts, No Spills, Working with Honesty and Integrity”

Create a consistent message to understand what constitutes “safety culture”

Detail specific Esso policies and reinforce expectations through discussion

Align process and personal safety goals to achieve high performance in operations

The DVD component of the induction involved BTB’s production team spending time on location in Block 15 and in Luanda to get the necessary with contributions from Esso Angola, Transocean, Ensco, and service partner representatives. The subsequent quiz and roll out was carried out by BTB Operations Manager, Stephen Thomas, working with existing RSTC’s and other BTB Safety Coaches on board the three rigs in Block 15 to integrate into their existing induction format.

Things don’t always go to plan...

A written quiz had been developed in order to reinforce the important content however, due to varying literacy levels, it was deemed inappropriate for many of the crew members – both existing and new arrivals. A completely revised verbal quiz was created which proved much more effective as it provides the scope for more “prompting and discussion” which was beneficial for both the inductees and the inductor.

The permanent BTB Safety Coaches are now conducting the induction with existing and all new crew which details the expectations for working with Esso Angola and what constitutes good safety culture. It also allows our coaches to develop relationships with the individuals and teams on board – a critical component of working in such a dynamic environment and making positive change.

The recent campaign start-up of the Celtic Sea in Angola required some long hours and some not in-considerable coaching from the BTB Angola Team. The recent feedback from a Esso Angola Drilling Supervisor was a great accolade for the work of Brendan Quail.

‘Simon, I just wanted to drop you a note to follow up on our conversation. Brendan has been a vital member of the Celtic Sea Team. His unique ability to interact and influence the national team members we have on the Celtic Sea is a major contributor to the successful startup we have had. The deck crews where he has had the most influence are now a high performing team and are setting the example for the rest of the rig. We need to thank Brendan for his efforts and help to get the Celtic Sea where it is at today’.

Brendan has been a huge asset to our work in Angola. Further to this Brendan has embraced the Angolan languages of Kikongo, Kimbundu & Umbundu. Indeed Portuguese may be the national language, but the ability to communicate in a local dialect is something else. Coaching isn’t just teaching. Recruiting Dr Elizabeth (Lisi) Beyersmann to the team has given BTB added depth in our Psych services supporting the work of Dr Hase.

Lisi has a Doctorate in Cognitive Science completed at the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Computational Linguistics and a Masters of Science in Computational Linguistics, which she obtained at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. She has both a professional and personal passion for languages and culture and how this affects individual and group behaviour. This is a particularly valuable asset given the diverse geographical nature of the drilling industry. Lisi works with the BTB Team providing research into improving communication in multi language and multi-cultural operations.

With several years experience conducting research in the field of Cognitive Science and teaching Psychology, she works with clients using behavioural techniques such as priming to investigate cognitive mechanisms underlying reading and reading acquisition. Lisi has published research papers in major scientific journals and spoken at conferences in the USA, Europe, New Zealand and Australia, including the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Psychonomic Society, the European Society for Cognitive Psychology Conference, and the Australasian Experimental Psychology Conference.

Lisi is fluent in German (native), English, French and Spanish and has worked with English, German, Spanish and Taiwanese participants to explore cross-cultural aspects of cognitive processing. Lisi lived in Germany and France, before she moved to Australia in 2006 to pursue her doctorate studies. She currently resides in Freshwater on the Northern Beaches of Sydney where she enjoys swimming, surfing, reading, hiking and playing classical violin.

In 2011, Lisi was awarded the Macquarie University Research Award for Excellence in Higher Degree Research. This award is a significant achievement in academic performance and research. We have worked in every corner of the globe and have grown considerably. As such on 19 December we officially moved into our new offices in Brookvale, Sydney. We are now operating in substantially larger offices with integrated iT allowing us to connect to our team and our clients no matter where they are.

We have recruited far and wide to find ‘the best in their field’ and brought them into the BTB Team. Our existing team have led campaigns throughout the world and allowed our clients to have surety and confidence in our contribution to their safe operations.

We have had some wonderful highs and some challenging lows. Losing Graeme Phillips to Cancer this year was a massive loss to our team. Graeme’s experience and zest for life is missed daily. We have all spent more weekends away from home than we would have liked and have often extended work trips, missed flights and had to call home to say, ‘sorry, I’ll be late’. Importantly we have all conducted what we do safely and securely.

BTB will not be sending cards this year. Instead we believe that by supporting ‘Dad’s In Distress’ we will make a difference to the lives of men who, in particular at this time of year, need assistance. For many new workers this is the first time they will have worked on a drilling rig and with expatriate workers. To do this BTB have engaged Pidgin and Huli (local language group) translators to assist with training. What does this mean? Training is understood, objectives are clear and expectations are shared.

Keith ‘Dinga’ Bell has spent the last month working with crews, supervisors and management in PNG. Keith stated, ‘Everyone is here for the right reason. They realise the challenges and they realise this project isn’t going to be won over night. It will take time, effort, energy, patience with one another and above all a real belief that we can do this hurt free. I’ve been involved in many operations over the last 30 off years and I feel good about this one. I know we can do it and I know we are training people and coaching people with the skills and beliefs to achieve hurt free operations’.

PNG is a collection of hundreds of family groups, clans, tribes and languages – which includes some 300+ known languages and many unknown. Thus dealing with indigenous people, communities, culture’s and customs with enthusiasm is imperative.

Greig ‘GT’ Taylor has lived out of a swag in the top end of Australia for the better half of the last 15 years. Living and working with indigenous people allows GT to understand the many challenges expatriate workers and western society face when living in indigenous communities.

Over to GT, ‘I can’t wait to get into PNG. It’s like the last frontier. Having worked and lived with over a dozen different Aboriginal groups in the Northern Territory and Western Australia during the last 15 years you get to learn a little bit about how similar we, as a western society are as well as the noticeable differences. Indigenous cultures are ingrained with respect, custom and expectation. We know this will be the same in PNG and I think it’s going to be the experience of a lifetime’.

Peter Tomlin who has been working with the Esso Angola Drill Team throughout 2011 as a Safety Coach stated, ‘GT is going to be a huge asset to the team in PNG. He has a real knack for working with indigenous cultures and is passionate about safety. Leading remote tours and educational groups throughout the top end of Australia, and working with local tribes, is no easy task. GT’s keen as mustard and we know he is going to make a great coach in PNG’.

Transocean Deepwater Frontier, Singapore

The BTB Induction Production team filmed in the waters off Singapore in preparation for the Deepwater Frontier operating in the waters of northern Western Australia for the Gorgon/Jansz LNG project.
Drilling in Western Canada is a very different proposition to drilling offshore in Angola, SE Asia or Australia. ‘Canada is cold for a start!’ is the obvious comment but more pertinent than that is the challenges of drilling in Western Canada. Drilling is seasonal and is at it’s peak during the winter when access to land rigs is often via an ice road over frozen lakes or access roads. Further to this the workforce is seasonal. During summer most workers are farming or working in the rural industry. Come winter when everything is frozen the workforce moves from farming to drilling, as such the need to ensure that safety practices and expectations are met is imperative. Rig culture is something that has to be developed, nurtured and sustained, often during non-sustained periods of drilling. For this to occur rig culture must be sustainably strong with a team willing to welcome new team members, change and challenge daily.

By the end of 2010 Rig 175 was the safest and best performing rig in The Bass Strait at the bottom tip of Australia. Achieving this result wasn’t easy and Nabors put in the hard yards to achieve it. Approaching 12 months since the end of contract of Rig 175 the Nabors leadership team is preparing for the biggest challenge globally today, the PNG LNG project in the southern highlands of Papua New Guinea.

BTB is working with Nabors Australian Leadership Team developing the culture to achieve operations that are ‘Right From The Start’. John O’Brien, Country Manager for Australia & PNG stated, “Right From The Start isn’t a throw away line. It means that we do everything possible to give ourselves the best possible opportunity to achieve hurt free operations and high performance in everything we do”. BTB is working with Nabors Australia and Nabors PNG to develop the leadership skills required for the challenges of PNG through ongoing professional development and coaching.

The subject of positive psychology and safety may not have an immediate direct link, however the relationship is indeed clear. Our mindset plays a significant role in how well we do what we do and what level of consciousness we bring to the workplace, culture and task.

Simon stated, “For too many years we have not recognised the significant role that the ability to project optimism in the workplace plays. We know from a consistent stream of data published over the last 24-36 months that the ability to work with a positive mindset is a significant determining factor in the ability of the workplace to function and perform. Safe performance is a direct result of the ability of the workplace to welcome change willingly and grow from it”.

The training, conducted in Singapore during August and September 2011, was a cutting edge program and required the experience and dedication of two of BTB’s finest to deliver. Greg Cotton (Head – Strategy & Engagement) and Ian Hockridge (Head – Programs & Development) led the BTB team who delivered the complex program to a demanding and focussed audience from around the world.

In terms of drilling campaigns, Gorgon/Jansz remains the most significant investment in Australian offshore drilling. Work crews will be dealing with the harsh climate of north-west Western Australia. The demand to ensure operations are conducted safely and according to the expectation of the Western Australian and Australian Governments is higher than ever. Following the 2009 West Atlas oil spill in the sensitive Kimberly area the daily activities of drilling operators has never been watched so closely.

With over 300 participants from over 25 countries and more than a dozen different companies the workshop addressed the key issue of safety leadership. Greg made the challenge clear to all participants within 30 minutes of day one, ‘Do you believe in the vision of working hurt free and are you prepared to do what it takes to achieve it’? Participants ended the workshop with a simple objective and a clear vision: ‘No hurts, No spills, Integrity and honesty in all we do’, and submitted personal written Commitments defining what action they will take to implement the vision. Participants will be followed up in coming months to check their commitments.

This will be followed by ongoing support through onboard Safety Coaching and professional development. The PNG project remains one of the most challenging projects globally today.

In pursuit of conducting a Hurt and Spill Free Operation, ExxonMobil has engaged BTB to assist Nabors Drilling continue their ongoing working relationship that has proven to be both safe and rewarding for both companies in past campaigns, most recently Rig 175 in the Bass Strait. For the first time the SLT program will be delivered to national and expatriate workforces separately recognising quite different challenges for both parties.

This will allow the key learning’s to be tailored to the more experienced expatriate workforce who will need to take a leading and coaching role with the less experienced national crew. The PNG SLT program will, alternatively, be a sincere and direct approach to ensure participants clearly understand not only the importance of safety, but the key role thye play within in daily.

PNG has been known as one of the “last frontiers” of exploration and there will not only be many safety considerations associated with drilling in the region, but even just operational and logistical tasks present unchartered difficulties.

Simon Phin, BTB’s CEO, is reflective on the challenges and opportunities PNG presents. “We are in the fortunate position of working with two close partners, ExxonMobil and Nabors Australia. Our close alignment and ability to recognise each others needs I have no doubt will ensure we are able to do what we do as safely and securely as possible”.

BTB will be working closely with Nabors and ExxonMobil between Sydney, Melbourne, Dubai and PNG to ensure the crew is prepared for a Hurt Free campaign from start-up through to completion.

At the time of writing, the Celtic Sea (currently in Cape Town, South Africa) was due to go under tow to Angola whilst the Transocean Rather (TOR) and TLP-A rigs have received ongoing safety coaching.

BTB Safety Coaches Peter “Tommo” Tomlin and Brendan Quail have made fantastic inroads in a sometimes challenging work environment due to the high number of service partners working/visiting the rig as it is prepared for contract in the docks, (some 200-300 per day). With the Celtic Sea about to move into position and officially go under Esso Angola contract the dynamic duo are looking forward to building on the Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) initiatives already implemented.

Brendan, in the BTB office on his time off stated: “I really enjoy working with the guys out there and I’m starting to get a bit of the local dialect going which they really seem to appreciate. It makes the world of difference”. To boost the crews’ motivation for Weekly Safety Meetings Brendan and Tommo have prepared some great questions through the medium of video – some of which they make themselves by filming actual crew members answering some basic safety questions and incorporating it into the topic for the week. The attention and interest in the weekly meetings has had a significant improvement – and we know Brendan and Tommo quite enjoy putting guys on the spot each week to then entertain the crew with.

Over on the TOR, where Matt and Russell have been back-to-back as Safety Coaches, tremendous inroads have been made in quite a short time to build rapport with the crew and the management team – both on the rig and in the Esso Angola head office in Luanda.

Matt stated recently: “We had Larry D McMahan, Vice President of Transocoean, visit the rig and was very happy to have us on board and was interested in what we do and how we do it. He also said that Harry Longwell, ExxonMobil Global Drilling Operations Manager, spoke highly of BTB and what we are doing”. Matt and Russell are obviously doing a great job driving BBS and supporting the crew to achieve a “Hurt Free” operation.

Dear Friends & Family, regretfully I must pass on the news of Graeme Phillip's passing this morning. Graeme was an integral part of my life professionally and personally over many years as well as the energy behind ‘Beyond The Break’ in our early days.

I spent Mother's Day with Graeme planning for the future and finding better ways to do what we, as a company and people, do. Graeme, as Head of Leadership, was forever looking forward. For those who had the opportunity to spend time with Graeme will remember his passion for life, developing leadership qualities in all of us and finding better and safer ways to conduct our work globally. Graeme was diagnosed with Cancer during early 2010 while leading our work in the Bass Strait. Over the last 16 months I have remained in constant touch with Graeme, his counsel and optimism for life was infectious.

Graeme was the happy and positive energy that we all seek in our lives. A people person who always wanted to find a better way to bring out the best in people. He was a distinguished Australian Army Officer serving in East Timor (with Gen. Peter Cosgrove), Cambodia and representing the Australian Government at the UN in New York. He was the best - and a first class man. He leaves behind many friends, family, his wife Annie and four children, Jess, Harry, Jack & Will.

Graeme reminded me, and as a reminder to all of us, to 'suck the marrow out of life and live it to the full' only two weeks ago. A parting word from a gentle human being and a wonderful man. RIP.

Graeme, with Annie, developed 'Yarrabin' as a place to escape the hustle and bustle of life on the back of a horse deep in the Australian countryside. Remember Graeme and visit Yarrabin, www.yarrabin.com, Annie, Jess, Harry, Jack & Will would love to see you.

The LNG PNG project, a $10bn investment and the Gorgon/Jansz project, a $20bn investment, are two of Australia's most exciting and demanding projects. The Esso Australia Drill Team, responsible for drilling activities in both of these projects, invited every company CEO/MD/Country Manager to attend this two-day conference in Melbourne. A two day workshop to understand the challenges faced by everyone in meeting a commitment to conduct hurt free operations where ‘Nobody Gets Hurt’. Ensuring no business objective came before safety.

Jim McDermott, Esso Australia Drilling Manager, stated, "Flawless execution is the end result of a commitment to hurt free operations". Working with heads of Transocean, Nabors, Halliburton, Schlumberger, P&O, Oceaneering, Weatherford and other service companies the workshop allowed companies to discuss and work together, honestly and transparently, how they, collectively, could achieve hurt free operations. An industry first.

'Beyond The Break' has been engaged to lead all behavioural safety initiatives for both projects, LNG-PNG & Gorgon/Jansz. Simon Phin, BTB’s CEO stated, "Two projects with very different demands. We are committed to both projects and continue to recruit the best in industry to achieve our objectives over the next 2-3 years. We are excited and prepared".

Able to communicate with all people regardless of their background, heritage or status. His enthusiasm, good humour, story telling and optimism have kept Tommo in demand in 2011 as a hands on Safety Coach. Over the last 15 years Tommo has led a life of juggling two quite different demands. Offshore Safety Coach/Advisor/Officer and remote out-back guide of the Australian bush in the top end, the Northern Territory. Australia’s last great frontier. A remote guide isn’t your weekend stroll around the bush.

Tommo relayed, "Travelling in the bush for 4-6 weeks at a time with no mod-cons available forces you to think first, think smart and never put anything above or before the safety". To put 'safety' into context imagine you’re a hundred or so kilometres from the nearest town, station or contact – and everyone is relying on you to get them back to civilisation safely. There's nothing around you except bush, wildlife, 'more crocs and snakes than you could poke a stick at' and a walking group relying on you 24/7. "It (being bush) forces you to teach and communicate well. Being on a rig is no different, help people learn the right way first time and they will teach from then on the right way all the time".

Tommo remains one of BTB's most respected Safety Coaches and specialises in campaign start-ups no matter the challenge, location or task. For Tommo coaching is that right mix, or blend, of direction and support with a good story to tell... and he has more tales to tell, compulsively hysterical, than most of us could fit in a life time. Crocodiles, Snakes, Buffalo – all over a cup of coffee or tea.

Brendan brings to BTB a strong background in education and teaching. He is also a madly passionate traveller and student of Africa and African culture. So the opportunity to have Brendan a skilled and respected teacher and safety specialist working in Africa and projects in Angola was a perfect fit. Brendan holds a Diploma of Teaching, a Bachelor of Education Degree and a Master of Education Degree from the University of NSW. He also holds a Certificate IV in Construction.

Brendan stated, "I spent the year of 1988 travelling from the edge of the north of the continent to the southern tip of Africa and loved every minute of it – although some moments were a little more memorable than others! Since then my love affair with Africa, and African people, has never waned. I'm really looking forward to being back in Angola. The country has come so far it’s just an exciting place to be working. The Angolans are sincerely enthusiastic to see Angola once again become a jewel in the African continent. What an opportunity, I’m thrilled to play my part".

Brendan is working with crews on board the 'Celtic Sea' on behalf of Esso Angola.
Greg Cotton & Ian Hockridge have over 50 years between them
(and that's being respectful of age!) in the area of behavioural
change in hazardous and dangerous environments. Thousands of people
from manufacturing, mining as well as oil & gas have benefitted
from Greg & Ian's counsel, advice and leadership. Their
experience in offshore drilling is recognised globally. Greg &
Ian are currently working with ExxonMobil empowering safety leaders
to work with personal commitment daily towards achieving high
performance in sustainably hurt free environments.

BTB's CEO, Simon Phin, stated, "I think we're successful because
we are prepared to listen to our customers, understand their
working environment's and respond accordingly. Importantly we have
to tell them what we see, honestly and directly. Having Greg &
Ian providing this counsel is priceless. Their experience and
candour is invaluable".

Greg Cotton is BTB's Head of Strategy & Engagement. Ian
Hockridge is BTB's lead facilitator of change programs. If you want

Making a difference in operations is more than some kind words,
a little motivation and guest speakers. Making a difference is
doing something different to gain different results and achieve
goals that are perceived as un-obtainable. Jim Dittman, Drilling
Manager, Esso Angola, is a man well known for goal setting.

In 2003 Esso Angola had 64 people hurt in operations by 2010
this figure had dropped to 3 people. That figure alone is a
significant accomplishment. However the commitment to hurt free is
that 'Nobody Gets Hurt'. Jim's personal commitment to 'I Will Make
A Difference' has seen drilling contractors, service partners and
would be customers understand clearly that the only way people can
hope to live in a hurt free environment is by living daily the
commitment that you can, and should, make a difference.

The Beyond The Break team is working with Jim Dittman and the
Esso Angola Drill Team to achieve this day by day. It's a challenge
and it's worth it.

Weatherford Drilling Australia operate the land Rig '826' in
Western Australia with an Australian crew committed to achieving
high performance through safe and sustainable operations. When
safety goals were not being consistently met Weatherford called in
Beyond The Break to assist.

Working with Weatherford Drilling's newly appointed National
QHSE Manager, Russell Bassett, was a delight for BTB. Matt Wing,
BTB Safety Coach, stated, "Working with Russell again after the
Ocean Patriot campaign in the Bass Strait through 2009/2010 was
great. Russell has a real commitment to people and we know that
Weatherford will benefit greatly from this commitment. He doesn't
miss a beat and won't make any compromises for safety". Matt, with
Dr Stewart Hase & Simon Phin, facilitated what will be
remembered as an honest and up-front 'Safety Excellence Workshop'
in Gin Gin, north of Perth. The crew responded tremendously well
with many opportunities for improvement to be made by crew and
management alike.

In late 2011 Nabors Australia will undertake one of the most
significant challenges and rig moves to date. Rigs 702 & 703
will arrive in the port of Lea, following their construction
offshore, on the north/eastern tip of Papua New Guinea before
making the climb to the Highlands of PNG. BTB has enjoyed working
with Nabors Drilling Australia for a number of years and enjoyed
being a part of the successful Rig 175 campaign in The Bass Strait
of Victoria, Australia. A campaign that achieved 100+ and 200+ hurt
free days in offshore drilling operations.

BTB is working with Nabors Drilling in Australia and PNG in 2011
and 2012 to ensure all operations are planned and executed to the
Nabors standard, 'Right From The Start', every start, every time.
BTB's Director of People & Performance, Dr Stewart Hase,
stated, "Nabors know how to work safely and know what commitment is
required to make this happen. It start's and ends with leadership.
We know they are capable of the challenges and opportunities
ahead".

Transocean, the world's largest offshore drilling contractor,
provides a versatile fleet of mobile offshore drilling units to
help customers find and develop oil and natural gas reserves.
Building on more than 50 years of experience with high
specification rigs, its 18,000 employees are focused on safety and
safe offshore drilling performance. 2010 was Transocean's most
challenging year with the loss of 11 men on the Deepwater Horizon
in the Gulf of Mexico. 11 lives lost. Operations in a post
Deepwater Horizon environment with a commitment to safety and safe
performance are as important as ever.

Beyond The Break Pty Ltd look forward to working with Transocean
West Africa in meeting the challenges faced daily in all offshore
drilling environments. BTB will be working with Transocean's
leadership team on the Deepwater Rather and the upcoming GSF Celtic
Sea in Block 15 located some 350km's offshore northwest of Luanda,
Angola. BTB's CEO & President, Simon Phin, stated, "The
Transocean team in West Africa have achieved some great results in
years past. 2010 and 2011 have been challenging years for the
organisation globally and locally in West Africa. Our team is
looking forward to working with Transocean in Luanda and offshore
with our Safety Coaches. Transocean have some great people wanting
to achieve great results - we're looking forward to the challenge
ahead".

The oil fields of Angola remain one of the most challenging yet
rewarding working environments globally today. Angola has moved on
from the debilitating effects of a prolonged civil war to establish
itself as one of Africa's most progressive and developing
economies. Angola is responsible for over 2 million barrels of oil
per day (bpd) and remains one of the most consistent, stable and
successful oil producing states within Africa and the world
today.

Esso Angola Drilling has, since 2003, seen a significant
improvement in safety performance and daily rig safety across the
rig fleet under the leadership of Jim Dittman, Drilling Manager for
Esso Angola. Jim's commitment to developing leaders from within
Angola is legendary, as such he remains one of drilling's most
respected and liked leaders. BTB is looking forward to working with
Esso Angola across all operations for 2011/2012.

BTB's Chief Executive & President, Simon Phin, stated, "It's
a real thrill to work with Jim Dittman and his team. They have
achieved great things over the last five years and to be involved
in their ongoing commitment to a hurt free workplace is a real
privilege. The Angola Drill Team has achieved significant and
noticeable change on offshore exploration and drilling rigs we know
that the challenges ahead are achievable and we couldn't be more
excited by the opportunity".

Beyond The Break Pty Ltd warmly welcomes Russell Telford, Peter
Tomlin & Matthew Wing to the BTB team.

Between 2008 and 2010 we had the opportunity of working with
some outstanding people in The Bass Strait. People committed to
safety and safe performance.

While working with crews in a 24/7 environment you tend to
notice the leaders. They stand out for what they do, as well as
what they don't do, what they say and what they don't say.
Noticeably, they go about their business and lead by example.

Russell, Peter & Matthew were the leaders leading on the
deck, the drill floor and in daily pre-tour meetings that
contributed to the high performance obtained with Rig 175 (Nabors
Drilling) and The Ocean Patriot (Diamond Offshore) in The Bass
Strait. Achievements including 250 Days Hurt Free on board Rig 175
and 100 Days Hurt Free on board the Ocean Patriot is a direct
result of a culture created through sound leadership and a
commitment to working towards shared goals.

In 2011 Russell, Peter & Matthew will be able to offer
expertise in all areas of HSE Leadership onboard offshore drilling
rigs.

Greg Cotton, BTB's Senior Statesman, will work with Nabors
and ExxonMobil in developing an effective approach to improving
safety standards and performance on board Rig 175. Greg's extensive
experience working with ExxonMobil globally and his ability to deal
with the issues that need to be dealt with transparently and
honestly provided encouragement for ExxonMobil and Nabors as they
approach the critical 'hands on' phase of the campaign.

Greg stated, "I'm looking forward to working with Nabors
and Rig 175. At the outset I'm impressed by management's commitment
to be open to change. It's great to see and I can see that
International Sea Drilling and Nabors Drilling Limited want to do
whatever it takes to get it right from the start. It's a great
philosophy and a wonderful step forward".
